If you are like me - around 40+, and a busy business owner, the thought of participating in social media seems daunting. We are continually pressured by friends, the news and our industry journals into thinking that if we don't jump on the boat soon, we'll miss it completely.
Keeping up with technology is often a common concern for business professionals as we age. The "young bucks" come into the work place who are more tech savvy than we could ever image. So we put something together for you to ease your way into social media at your own pace.
There’s some truth to that, but remember that new internet technologies typically take hold with consumers FIRST, then with businesses SECOND. Within business: B2C (business-to-consumer) is first with the younger demographics, then the remainder of the demographics, THEN B2B (business-to-business). So, you might be saying “great, I have a little time.” Well, I wouldn’t delay, but I wouldn’t dive in head first either.
You can ease your way into the world of social networking by first participating as a consumer. Set some time aside each week to play. Don’t bite off more than you can chew. Go slow.
Here’s what I recommend . . .
- Start with LinkedIn – You’re in business, so this makes the most sense.
- Create your account. [Stop. Rest.]
- Fill out your profile. [Pat yourself on the back. Breathe.]
- Invite some friends or colleagues to join - people you have been wanting to connect with OR answer some of those requests you have been getting. [Smile.]
- NOW, you can take one of those million webinars or seminars you have been receiving invitations to attend. You’ve got something to play with. [Go, go, go.]
- Next, try Facebook – This is where you can learn from friends and your teenage nephew
- Create your account & start filling out your profile a little at a time.
- Invite some friends to link to you or answer some requests.
- Play, communicate & enjoy yourself. Look for some old high-school buddies or colleagues from the last company you worked at before starting your business.
